18.1.2003 Matjaž Zupan – Slovenian coach of the year 2002
Matjaž Zupan took over the place of national head coach in ski jumping in the year 2000. He is known as a coach who turned the trend of average results up, literally back to the stars. He brought back Slovenian top ski jumpers from a long lasting crisis, to the top rankings in the world cup. The culmination of his coach career was bronze medal of Slovenian team in Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City 2002, with which also most sceptical started to believe in his powerful determination to aim high.
He has built very positive team spirit and brought new dimension of motivation in the team after 3 pessimistic years. But his main quality is not only that he’s a very good psychologist, but also that he is an expert in the field of technique and physical preparation. For him is characteristically that he is constantly searching for new approaches in training of their very specific sport.
He started to work with TMG team the same year, as he became national trainer and is surely the first Slovenian coach who implemented this Slovenian innovation in the training of his athletes. Because of very good cooperation with TMG team and friendly relationship with TMG consultant Djordjevič, they were the first team who implemented, not only basic TMG measurements but also a very specific TMG measurement of optimal knee angles. The test was in a way developed first of all for Slovenian ski jumpers, who used the results in their physical preparation.
